We take pride in bringing to you YORadio’s Featured Artist of the Month, Keji Hamilton of Lagos, Nigeria. Keji is an inspiration to me and to all of you as well. Not only this, but he is a multi-talented musician who played with the great Fela Kuti. You should hear this dymanic man on his maiden CD, self entitled, “Keji”. I hope you enjoy our interview as follows:
Princess Adinasse: Keji, how did you first become interested in music and who were your early musical influences?
Keji: My flair for music started when I was a kid. As a young lad I used to listen to rock and country music. I was about seven/ eight years old.
Princess Adinasse: I know you played with Fela, but who influenced you earlier on?
Keji: The Beatles, Kiss e.t.c
Princess Adinasse: How would you describe the vibe on your new CD, "Keji"?
Keji: It is purely a mixture of root and classical Afro music.
Princess Adinasse: Are you accomplishing what you want to accomplish with your music"?
Keji: Not yet, but it can only get better.
Princess Adinasse: Keji, tell me, where were you born?
Keji: In Nigeria
Princess Adinasse: Being this is your first album, pleas, how do you describe your music to people?
Keji: A combination of African percussive rhythms and western wind instruments, africanly rhythmized.
Princess Adinasse: I noticed that you are a leading exponent of the Afro beat genre of music. For the YO Radio listeners, please what is your own description of the Afro beat genre?
Keji: It is the flavour that Fela introduced to World music.
Princess Adinasse: Any previous CD releases? Please tell me about them.
Keji: This is my debut album. I was involved in a couple of album releases with Fela Kuti and the Egypt 80 Band.
Princess Adinasse: Who do you consider to be your target audience?
Keji: People of all ages, especially the youths and lovers of music who see themselves as instruments of influence and change, in the world that we live in.
Princess Adinasse: What was the inspiration for the new "Keji" CD/ Album?
Keji: "Re-birth". A brand new Keji, free from drugs and the wild life; now full of vision and the passion to positively influence young people and the world.
Princess Adinasse: When YO Radio's listeners say the name "Keji", what do you want them to think?
Keji: CHANGE
Princess Adinasse: Where might our listeners purchase your music?
Keji: Most Major download stores, including iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, Napster, Amiestreet, Groupietunes, Voeveo.
Princess Adinasse: Our listenters will be happy to hear that Keji Hamilton pastors The Tabernacle of Prayer in Surulere, Lagos. Outside the church walls, he is also very actively involved in the rehabilitation of drug addicts and other social derelicts(having, himself, been delivered from years of cocaine/heroin addiction and street crime).
I do hope you will listen to Keji Hamilton on Yoruba Oduduwa Radio and wishlist his tracks as you hear them, better yet…purchase them as you sit there listening.
